Jewelweed variation

A quick sampling showing the cool variation in the small population of jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) growing in the ditch at the end of the driveway. The pale variant (with reduced orange/yellow background color) had first caught my eye several years ago, but my favorites are the ones where the red dots are expanded to completely cover the petals.

  1. I also have a strain of Commelina with a delicate pale lavender petal- I collected it from a ditch several miles from my home. Never saw any variation like yours in our jewelweed!

  3. I was surprised by the variation too. It's just a little spot about the size of a dinner table. Maybe the small population size has led to more inbreeding and revealed gene combinations that might otherwise be buffered or hidden???
